Field hockey balls – training or match?

Small, hard and faster than it looks – the ball is the cheapest piece of hockey equipment, yet it can make the biggest difference to training quality. Here is how a match ball differs from a training one, what the dimples are for and which colour to choose.

Size and weight – one standard

A field hockey ball weighs 156–163 g and has a circumference of 224–235 mm – the range set by international rules. The hard plastic shell (usually with a cork or foam core) makes it resistant to hits from a stick swung at high speed. That is exactly why hockey is played in shin guards, and the goalkeeper wears full protective gear.

What are the dimples for?

Training or match?

Match balls must keep identical parameters across the whole batch – perfectly balanced, with a consistent bounce, which makes them pricier. Training balls have the same size and weight but looser manufacturing tolerances – for daily technique work, shooting and drills they are perfectly sufficient, and they are bought in bigger quantities. It is worth having at least a few for training: nothing kills the rhythm of a session like chasing a single ball.

Which colour?

The classic is white – most visible on green and blue turf. Orange, yellow or pink come in handy when visibility drops: in winter, at dusk or when players wear white kits. Indoors, smooth balls are used – on a dry floor the dimples are not needed.
