How to choose your first field hockey stick — a beginner's guide

Your first stick is the most important purchase of your hockey journey — and the most common source of mistakes. A stick that is too expensive, too stiff or too long can put you off the sport before it even begins. Here is how to choose wisely.

Start with length, not the brand

Stand the stick upright next to your leg — the top should reach roughly your hip bone. For children that usually means 26–32 inches, for adults 36.5–37.5. Do not buy a stick “to grow into”: one too long forces bad posture and makes learning ball control harder. You will find the exact height-to-length table in our Size Guide.

Less carbon = an easier start

A high carbon content sounds professional, but at the beginning it works against you: a stiff stick does not forgive reception mistakes and sends vibrations straight into your wrists. The best first stick is wooden or composite with up to 30% carbon — softer, with better ball feel and noticeably cheaper.

Bow: start with standard

Low bow and extra low profiles seen among competitive players are built for drag flicks and 3D play — for a beginner they make flat passing harder. Choose a standard or mid bow (~22 mm): predictable in reception and passing, which is what you learn first.

Midi head — the golden mean

  • Midi — universal, the easiest to learn receiving with — this is the one you want
  • Maxi — a larger surface, a frequent choice of defenders
  • Shorti — for advanced dribblers, too demanding at the start

How much should a first stick cost?

A sensible first stick costs around PLN 150–350. More expensive models (PLN 600 and up) only make sense once your receiving and hitting technique is solid — before that their advantages simply do not work, while their downsides (stiffness) do.

Pre-purchase checklist

  • Length matched to your height (table in the size guide)
  • Carbon up to 30% or wood
  • Standard / mid bow
  • Midi head
  • Variant matching where you play: outdoor (grass/artificial turf) or indoor (hall)

You will find all these parameters as filters in our shop — and if you prefer to ask, write to us. Equipment here is chosen by someone who has actually played the game. A full guide to stick parameters is in How to choose a stick.
